Word Count 04: The Martyrdom of Professor Sanchez

A project by Kasia Fudakowski
Word Count is an ongoing, fragmentary film project by artist Kasia Fudakowski which takes as it’s premise the following scenario: In the near future, scientists confirm a direct correlation between the dramatically rising sea-levels and the amount of words that we speak. The central narrative thread dips in and out of shorts shot around the world, which investigate the consequences of this new law, and humanity’s propensity to adapt and improvise from different cultural, economic and climactic perspectives.
As a result, delegates from every nation of the world gather together to find a quick solution and resolve that each citizen of the world shall be rationed to 433 words per day. This comes to be known as Cage Law after John Cage’s 4”33’. Most citizens accept this new status quo and try quickly to adapt, while others reject it entirely, believing that freedom of speech is equal to the sanctity of life.
'Word Count 04: The Martyrdom of Professor Sanchez’ is produced as part of a solo exhibition of Kasia Fudakowski at the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf in March 2018.
